Well being

Ysgol Bryn Gwalia is a nurturing, inclusive school, which provides exceptional care and support for its pupils. Relationships across the school are strong and parents, pupils and staff feel valued. Provision for pupils’ well-being is a strength of the school - Estyn 2023

At Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, we place a high priority on the wellbeing of our students and the cultivation of a safe and nurturing environment for everyone in our school community. We recognise that a positive school experience is essential for academic success and personal development, which is why we are committed to fostering an atmosphere where every pupil feels valued, supported, and secure.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of pupil wellbeing, we employ the PASS (Pupil Attitude to School and Self) Survey. This valuable tool allows us to gather insights into the attitudes and feelings of our students across three distinct levels: the whole school, specific classes or groups, and individual students. By analysing the data collected from the survey, we can identify trends and patterns that may indicate areas of concern or highlight strengths within our school community.

Examining wellbeing at these various levels enables us to take a holistic approach to support our pupils. In addition to the PASS Survey, we also consider other important data points, such as attendance records and academic performance. This multifaceted approach allows us to create a more complete picture of each student's experience and wellbeing, ensuring that we address any challenges they may face.

When we identify areas where intervention is needed, we are committed to implementing timely and evidence-based strategies. These interventions may be carried out directly within the school, utilising our own resources and staff expertise, or we may collaborate with external agencies that specialise in pupil support. By leveraging a range of resources, we can provide tailored assistance that meets the unique needs of our pupils and their families.

Ultimately, our goal at Ysgol Bryn Gwalia is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive both academically and personally. By prioritising wellbeing and actively seeking to understand and address the needs of our pupils, we are laying the foundation for a positive and enriching educational experience that empowers them to reach their full potential.

The school offers a range of beneficial initiatives to help pupils to improve their self-esteem and recognise their emotions. For example, the school’s nurture class, Dosbarth Derwen, supports small groups of pupils to regulate their behaviour and to make effective progress in their learning - Estyn 2023
