Trauma Informed Schools UK
Trauma Informed Approach at Ysgol Bryn Gwalia
At Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, we are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for all our pupils. To achieve this, we have embraced the Trauma Informed Schools UK (TISUK) approach, a research-based framework designed to support children and young people who may have experienced trauma or adversity. Our entire school staff has recently completed a full-day training course to ensure that every team member is equipped with the skills and understanding needed to implement trauma-informed practices in our classrooms and across the school environment.
What is a Trauma Informed Schools UK Approach?
A Trauma Informed Schools approach recognizes the impact that difficult life experiences—such as bereavement, family breakdown, or other stressful events—can have on children’s emotional and mental wellbeing. The TISUK approach emphasizes creating safe, respectful, and understanding environments where all children, especially those who may have experienced adversity, can thrive. Trauma-informed schools focus on building trusting relationships, providing emotional support, and promoting resilience through positive interactions. This approach is not limited to pupils who have experienced trauma but benefits every child by creating a supportive, empathetic school culture.
Benefits of a Trauma Informed Approach
The TISUK approach has benefits for all members of our school community:
- Improved Wellbeing: Trauma-informed practices promote emotional wellbeing, helping pupils feel safe, respected, and understood, which is foundational for learning and growth.
- Better Learning Outcomes: When children feel secure and supported, they are more engaged in learning and better able to reach their full academic potential.
- Resilience Building: By teaching pupils strategies to manage emotions and cope with challenges, we equip them with lifelong skills for resilience and emotional health.
- Positive School Environment: A trauma-informed approach fosters kindness, empathy, and mutual respect, creating a positive school climate where every child feels valued.
Our Commitment to Trauma-Informed Practice
To strengthen our commitment to this approach, Mrs. Dalton (Head Teacher), Miss Sturdy (Deputy Head), and Mrs. Wyatt (Family Liaison Officer) have all completed an intensive year-long TISUK Diploma, each passing with distinction. This advanced training enables them to lead and model trauma-informed practices throughout the school, providing further support to pupils and staff. Their expertise allows us to tailor our approach to meet the needs of all students, ensuring that every child feels understood, supported, and able to succeed.
Working Together for the Wellbeing of Every Child
At Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, we believe that emotional wellbeing is essential for a happy, successful school experience. Our Trauma Informed Schools approach allows us to support children’s social, emotional, and academic needs comprehensively, helping each child to feel valued, empowered, and ready to learn. We are proud to take this step toward a brighter future for every member of our school community.
